Avoid embarrassing slips and uncomfortable dentures in Rickmansworth

Dentures are made up of an acrylic plate which you wear over your gums that contain a set of false teeth. They can be used to replace a complete set of missing teeth, a partial set of missing teeth or a single missing tooth.

Dentures remain the most cost-effective way to replace missing teeth and on average, they last between 7 and 10 years. After which, they will need to be replaced.

Over time, dentures start to slip and move about which can make them uncomfortable.

This is because once you lose a tooth, your gums and bones in your jaw gradually start to recede causing the dentures to move.

To help deal with this problem you can:

  • Get your dentures readjusted – they are filed to fit better
  • Get your dentures re-lined – this simple procedure re-shapes the underneath of your dentures so that they sit more comfortably on the gums. Denture re-lines usually are needed every year or two
  • Get a dental implant retained denture known as an overdenture

What is an overdenture?

Implant retained dentures are made up of a new false tooth or false teeth which are attached to the acrylic plate and clip on to a dental implant that sits beneath the gum. The dental implant firmly holds the denture in place.
Additionally, the dental implant acts as a replacement tooth root which prevents the loss of bone in your jaw. This means that your face shape is retained, it won’t sag and won’t appear prematurely aged.

You can have up to 8 dental implants in your upper or lower jaw and once these have healed, the overdenture clips on to the dental implants with a metal bar which keeps your new teeth firmly in place. You remove your overdenture at night by unfastening the clip and taking out your dentures for cleaning.

What is the process

Implant supported dentures in Rickmansworth?

Step One - Free Consultation

At your free consultation in Rickmansworth, we will talk to you more about dentures and discuss the possibility of wearing implant retained dentures.

We will assess your mouth, teeth and gums to determine which teeth are missing. At this stage we will take x-rays and a CT scan of your mouth and jaw which helps us to better understand the health of your gums and bones which are necessary for supporting the implant supported dentures.

We will also have a chat about your oral and general health as this will help us understand whether you are suitable for implant retained dentures. If you smoke or are on certain medication for example, we will have to discuss whether we can feasibly continue the process.

Step Two – Dental Implant Surgery

Your dental implant surgery will take place at Inspire Dental in Rickmansworth.

We will give you a local anaesthetic which will make your mouth numb so that you do not feel any pain.

If you have teeth in bad condition, these are gently extracted at this stage.

Next, our expert team will carefully place the dental implants in your jawbone according to where you have missing teeth.

Once the dental implants are in place, we will provide you with a temporary denture or you can wear your old set of dentures if these are in good condition.

Step Two – Dental Implant Surgery

Step Three – Healing Process

The dental implants need a period of between 3 and 6 months for the dental implant to integrate with your jawbone. This process is called osseointegration and is vital to ensure the success and longevity of your dental implants. During this time, the team at Inspire Dental will create your bespoke overdenture.
