Before & After
Dental Implants
What is the process
Dental Implants in Rickmansworth?
Your first step in the dental implant process begins with a free consultation where we look forward to talking to you more about the dental implant process.
Step One - Free Consultation
We will talk to you about your oral health and your general health too. This is vital to make sure that you are a valid candidate for dental implants. If for example you smoke or are on certain types of medication, we will need to wait until you have given up smoking and finished your other treatment which can be detrimental to the success of your dental implants.
We will also take x-rays and a CT scan of your teeth and gums. This gives a better picture of your gum health and your bone density which are both vital for the success of dental implant surgery.
At this stage we will take x-rays and a CT scan of your mouth and jaw which helps us to better understand the health of your gums and bones which are necessary for supporting all-on-4 dental implants.
We will also have a chat about your oral and general health as this will help us understand whether you are suitable for dental implant treatment. If you smoke, suffer from certain illnesses or take certain medication you may have to wait to start your dental implant treatment until you have given up smoking or finished your medication
Step Two – Treatment Plan
Step Three – Dental Implant Surgery
When you are ready and comfortable, we will give you a local anaesthetic which will make your mouth numb so that you do not feel anything.
If you have rotting or decayed tooth which need to be removed prior to your dental implant surgery, these are gently extracted at this point.
Next, depending upon the type of dental implants that you are having, we will gently make up to 4 small incisions in your gum. The dental implant is gently inserted into your jawbone. The abutment is then fitted and finally, a temporary prosthetic tooth is added so that you do not leave the dental surgery with a gap.
Step Four – Healing Process
Your mouth and gums may feel sore immediately after dental implant surgery, but this can be managed with paracetamol, and rest assured you will feel better in a day or two.
We wait for a period of between 3 and 6 months for the dental implant to integrate with your jawbone. This process is called osseointegration and is vital to ensure the success and longevity of your dental implants.
Step Five – Fitting of your Bespoke Restoration

What are
Dental implants?
The types of dental implants are listed below, but all of them are made up of the same 3 components:
A titanium rod which is gently placed into your jawbone and replaces your missing tooth root. Over time, this implant integrates with your jawbone and acts as an anchor to support your new tooth
An abutment which connects the titanium rod to the third and final component –
The dental crown forms your new tooth replacement. This is colour-matched to the other teeth in your mouth and is visible in your gum

Same day teeth
Also known as Same Day Smile or Teeth in a Day, this option is perfect for those with very few teeth, no teeth, or multiple teeth in poor condition. Using 4 or 6 implants, it supports a complete set of upper or lower teeth, all restored in just one day.

What are the benefits of
Dental implants in Rickmansworth?
Patients from Chorleywood, Northwood and throughout Hertfordshire are choosing to replace missing teeth with dental implants because:

- With dental implants, you can smile again with confidence and boost your self-esteem
- Unlike dentures, you can eat all your favourite foods with dental implants
- Dental implants protect the health of your remaining teeth, jaw and gums
- Dental implants are fixed in your mouth so there’s no need to worry about removing them for cleaning
- There’s no slipping or discomfort which can occur when wearing dentures
- You can chew and eat again without discomfort

Frequently Asked Questions
Dental Implants
Are dental implants better than dentures or bridges?
Dental implants, dentures and dental bridges all have their advantages and disadvantages. Dental implants are often considered better than dentures and bridges because:
- They are the most permanent option – once fitted, dental implants should last at least 40 years and with good care there’s no reason why they can’t last a lifetime
- They look and function just like another natural tooth. Dental implants won’t slip and become uncomfortable like dentures and there’s no need for special cleaning instructions – you simply brush and floss as usual
- With dental implants you can enjoy the complete functionality of a normal tooth. You can eat whatever you like, chew and eat with complete confidence without the worry of your dentures falling out or coming loose
- A dental implant is independent of any of your other teeth. With a dental bridge, the neighbouring teeth to the gap must be prepared which involves shaving away some of the healthy enamel. Should any of your natural teeth get damaged in the future, this will affect the entire bridge restoration
Is dental implant surgery painful?
How long does it take to get dental implants?
If your bone quality is low, you may need bone grafting which means that the entire process can take about 12 months.
